These health benefits of lemongrass was published in the Malay Mail Newspaper in Malaysia on 27 February 2013.

LEMONGRASS, or serai as it is commonly known here in Malaysia, goes by the scientific name of Cymbopogon.

It is a rich source of vitamins and minerals: vitamin A, C, folate, potassium, calcium, magnesium and a good amount of fatty acids.

1.0  Digestive System – Diarrhea, Nausea, Stomach Cramps
Lemongrass tea is good for the digestive system. It contains an active ingredient named Citral which helps in digestion of food.

Thus, it can be used for treating common gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea, bloating, nausea and stomach cramps.

2.0  Nervous System – Vertigo, Shaky Limbs, Lack of Reflexes, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Diseases
Lemongrass tea is highly beneficial for the nervous system, strengthening the nerves and keeping them active and healthy.

For this reason, lemongrass is used for treating various disorders related to the nervous system such as vertigo, shaky limbs, lack of reflexes, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and so on. If taken regularly, lemongrass tea can prevent all these diseases.

3.0  Cancer
Research studies in Israel have found that lemongrass has excellent cancer fighting properties. The component citral present in the tea activates the apoptosis mechanism of the cancerous cells. As a result, these malignant cells start destroying themselves, a reaction referred to as cell suicide.

The most amazing thing is that none of the healthy, normal cells are damaged in the process. Doctors in Israel are recommending that their patients drink lemongrass from 5–10 cups everyday to build up their immune system during chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

4.0  Detoxification - Water Retention, Cleaning Kidneys, Liver and Digestive Tract
If you are trying to lose some weight, you can use lemongrass tea for this purpose.It has diuretic properties that increase the frequency of urination. Almost four per cent of the total volume of the urine consists of fat. As a result, large amount of fat is eliminated due to frequent urination. In the process, it also remove water retention in the body. This way you will be able to lose a few extra pounds.

Another benefit of the diuretic effect of lemongrass tea is that it can act as a detoxifying agent. It can be used for cleansing various internal organs that including the kidneys, urinary bladder, liver and the digestive tract.

It also facilitates eradication of toxins like uric acid and cholesterol from the body.

5.0  Skin – Pimples, Skin Pores
Lemongrass tea brings about improvement in the overall skin condition. It’s anti-microbial properties can fight off the bacterial infection which causes pimples and acne.

Moreover, its astringent qualities reduce the size of the skin pores and make the skin appear healthier healthy.

6.0 Insomnia and Sleep Disorder
This herbal drink can cure insomnia and various other types of sleep disorders. This is possible because it has a calming effect on the mind and the body, and relieves the underlying tension and anxiety which often makes it difficult for us to fall asleep.

So ,a cup of this herbal drink before going to bed can give you a sound sleep at night.

7.0  Fever, Body Pain, Joint Pain
Lemongrass tea is highly effective for alleviating high fever as it increases perspiration which in turn helps to cool the body.

Moreover, it also fights the infection that triggers the fever. It works as an analgesic and relieves pain and inflammation. So it is used for treating various forms of body pain including arthritic joint pain, headache and sports injuries.

How to make lemongrass drink? Put one tablespoon of dried lemongrass leaves into one cup of boiling water.

Cover it up and let it soak for five minutes. Add one teaspoon of honey as sweetener before you like.

Some people prefer to add milk and sugar. You can drink it hot or serve it as iced tea.

Four cups of this drink can be consumed daily, soon after meals or before bedtime.
